Hi there. My name is Lorrin Windahl and I’m an Australian industrial designer. I’m about to embark on an African adventure to Botswana where I hope to live and work for the next year.
In 2004 I lived and worked in a rural village in Uganda as a health education volunteer. I lived in a single room mud hut without electricity and running water for 8 months. I taught basic health education in local primary and secondary schools and organised community workshops.
This experience has had a massive impact on my life and way of thinking. Since arriving back in Australia I have been planning my return.
I have a strong interest in socially responsible design as a result of my experiences. This blog is a chance for me to document my time living, travelling and working in Botswana. I will also be devoting some of this blog to my interest in socially responsible industrial design.
Enjoy.

Hi Lorrin, I found your blog today while searching for some stuff about Botswana. I’m a UK-based pharmacist and my wife (a nurse) and I are considering relocating to Botswana to work and live in future. We’ve travelled there quite a few times on holiday and love the place and people.
I was reading your posts and saw a friend had had problems with a job in healthcare recently – this concerned me a bit as I’m applying for a job with the Ministry of Health. Are you able to give me any background on this at all?
I’d also be really grateful for any useful info or tips you have – finding information on things like cost of living is proving really hard.
Many thanks
